District 9

District 9Ever since the teaser shown during the preview reel of Wolverine that left me with way too many questions, I knew something special was about to come out of New Zealand. After months of ARGs and tiny snippets of footage I left my underground bunker and ventured into the local movie theater and finally got to witness the horrors and mysteries of District 9.

Hot out of the long and painful death of the Halo movie, Blomkamp, with the help of master, Peter Jackson, worked to create a new, interesting, and all together fresh universe. I found myself pleasantly surprised, I had seen something I wasn’t entirely expecting and left the theater with a smile on my face and satisfaction of knowing I had, for once, paid money to see a good movie.

I had been waiting for a science fiction movie as amazing as District 9 for years. In May, Star Trek had filled the void left by its extremely sub-par predecessors, but District 9 is really what the genre had been needing.

My only gripe is that after leaving the theater and returning to my cave I found myself wanting more. Although the film stands its ground in its own right, the ending is left very open and had me asking, “Okay, when is the sequel?” I have no doubt in my mind that there will be a sequel as the film has already made a large profit in it’s opening weekend.

I don’t feel I need to go too in-depth with this miniature review, I will say this though: If you like science fiction, aliens, and a good story you should definitely go and see District 9.

Transformers: Revenge of The Fallen

I went and saw Transformers opening day on Wednesday, and I have to say I was impressed. I drove back from Alberta to Moose Jaw to, among other things, see it with a few of my friends. My only gripe is the story seeming dry, but it’s an action film and it’s what I’ve come to expect from Mr. Bay, he knows how to make an action film and he didn’t disappoint.

Halo Wars

Halo WarsJust got finished with Halo Wars and I have to say, the guys at Ensemble Studios (now Robot Entertainment) make a damned good RTS.

RTSs on consoles have been some of the most frustrating experiences I’ve had in my life, second only to trying to get the Mile High Club achievement in Call of Duty 4, a game pad just doesn’t have enough buttons or the prescision of a keyboard and a mouse. But Ensemble has managed to nail down a control scheme that does what it’s supposed to: control.

I remember games with confusing control schemes in games like Command and Conquer 3 and others, the one thing they had in common? They were all PC ports. Ensemble designed Halo Wars from the ground up for consoles, bringing simplicity to the forefront.

But enough about controls. I found the story to be a little on the short side even with the option for co-op play and leaderboards to give more replayability, given there is little chance of any DLC being produced now that Ensemble is closed. The game has a skirmish mode allowing you to take on up to 3 AI enemies with 2 AI allies, and an online multiplayer conponent where you can switch the AI bots out for real human beings.

I hope to have a full review up on my Napalm Riot page in a week or so, stay tuned.

The Good and the Bad… Company

I’ve been having quite a fun time playing Battlefield: Bad Company the past week, I’m really enjoying the tactical destruction and the gameplay overall. Although it seems that DICE was rushed to release this one as there is only ONE multiplayer game type.

If you feel like it, check out my S&S (Short & Sweet) review over on Napalm Riot.
